UN World Water Day 2025: Save Our Glaciers

On World Water Day 2025, the theme “Save Our Glaciers” emphasises the crucial role glaciers play in our ecosystem and highlights the urgency of addressing climate change. World Water Day 2025 kicks of the International Year of Glaciers’ Preservation to stress their importance in regulating the global climate and providing freshwater to nearly 2 billion people.

Glaciers, accounting for about 70% of earth’s freshwater, sustain nearly 2 billion people through glacier melt, snowmelt, and mountain run-off. These water sources are vital for drinking, agriculture, industry, energy production, and maintaining healthy ecosystems.

However, climate change, mainly due to human activities since the 1800s, is accelerating glacier melt, endangering both immediate water availability and long-term sustainability. The UN aims to raise awareness and mobilise efforts to protect these water sources.

Protecting glaciers is essential not only for preserving natural heritage but also for ensuring future water security worldwide. Building on that, SafeCREW focuses on ensuring safe drinking water by developing advanced tools and guidelines for the climate-resilient management for disinfected and non-disinfected supply systems.
