SafeCREW at SETAC Europe 35th Annual Meeting

The 35th SETAC Europe Annual Conference, a leading international forum in environmental chemistry and toxicology which brought scientists, regulators, and industry representatives together took place from May 11 to 15, 2025, in Vienna, Austria. The public scientific event aimed to disseminate cutting-edge research findings and facilitate collaborative dialogue among stakeholders from various sectors.

At the conference, SafeCREW results were presented on the identification of novel, highly polar sulfonated disinfection by-products (DBPs) in drinking water using supercritical fluid chromatography coupled with high-resolution mass spectrometry (SFC-HRMS). The presentation highlighted analytical challenges related to extremely polar compounds and demonstrated the potential of SFC-HRMS for DBP studies.  The presentation generated active discussion, with questions focusing on toxicity, formation mechanisms, and analytical strategies.

The event attracted 2,908 participants and facilitated the dissemination of crucial research findings regarding novel sulfonated disinfection byproducts (DBPs). The presentation prompted an active discussion, resulting in three pertinent questions during the five-minute Q&A session, addressing key topics such as toxicity, formation mechanisms, and analytical aspects of novel sulfonated DBPs.

This engagement not only highlights the importance of expert feedback but also underscores the necessity of stakeholder involvement in the advancement and application of scientific research, fostering a collaborative environment for future inquiries and improvements in this field.
