Cellulose and beyond – From production to application

On 28th November 2025, Carlo Punta, SafeCREW researcher at the Dipartimento di Chimica, Materiali e Ingegneria Chimica “Giulio Natta” at POLIMI was invited to present at the Symposium on Cellulose organised by Prof. Marc Delgado Aguilar at the Universitat de Girona.

The symposium targeted the scientific community and gathered researchers working on cellulose and its applications across different technological fields. The event provided an opportunity for invited guests to share recent advances and discuss the potential of cellulose as a sustainable and versatile substrate.

Within this framework, Carlo Punta presented the talk entitled “Safe and sustainable by design nanocellulose-based solutions for water treatment … and beyond.” Carlo Punta also presented the results on the design and development of cellulose nanosponges, proposed within SafeCrew project as sorbents alternative to activated carbons for drinking water pre-treatment.

The audience showed strong interest in the presented results, engaging in an active discussion after the talk. Several questions addressed scalability, practical implementation, and opportunities for joint research activities.

Overall, the symposium represented an effective platform for spreading project outcomes and strengthening scientific networking within the international cellulose research community.
